Design Statement
Twelfth Night is about the struggles of finding a place in a world where people don’t necessarily see you for who you really are. While Illyria is an idealistic location where all are welcome and celebrated, Viola, Olivia, and Orsino take the course of the show to unpack themes of self identity, love, and acceptance before they find their places in Illyria. The lighting supported these themes by first visually establishing the inviting, joyous, and celebratory feel of Illyria. Then, as the show shifted between larger group scenes and soliloquies/small group numbers the lighting shifted to support the interpersonal emotional journeys of Viola, Oliva, and Orsino. Visually sculpting their feelings of yearning, self doubt, grief, joy, and confidence through the use of a versatile color palette, realistic and emotionally evocative textures, and depicted the passage of time.
