Design Statement
While the design for The Men of Sherwood shows themes of male friendship, finding purpose through hard times, and grief into consideration, this design was an exercise in mixing art and practicality. The Cahoots Event Venue is one that is set up for a small few step stage, but we set the play in the round. The Cahoots lighting rig consists of 12-ish led pars facing the stage on one hanging position. This did not allow for the pars to evenly cover the space. Because of this, the 12 lights became a tonal accent for the 4 corners and center of the space, highlighting emotional swells.  To make sure everyone had enough face light, we leaned into the dingy cellar quality of light. We had a flickering camp fire in one corner of the set and candles strewn about. The piece de resistance was the string lights hung above the acting area. They were high enough up that it didn’t look like the wine cellar literally had string lights, but they cast a quality light similar to a dim cellar lit with candles and a campfire. We also acted as the house lights, so from the moment the audience entered the room, they were transported to this cellar.
