Design Statement
Loud Nite is a new work musical following a group of ‘weirdo dreamers’ who all meet up in a warehouse to have their ‘let go’s.’ The script explores themes of religion, capitalism, and the struggles these pose in finding acceptance both of self and from your community. As our version of the musical solidified it took on a structure of scene, a ‘let go’ song that explored a character(s) emotion and/or past, and a moment of catharsis/acceptance from the larger group. The lighting served as both a way to establish location and emphasize the emotional journey of the characters. As the lighting shifted from a base warehouse look into each let go, it visually carried the audience from the grounded warehouse into each let go’s emotional arch. Each let go had a sampling of the larger color pallet of teal, blue, purple, pink, and amber. By individualizing each let go from a larger pallet, it helped support how each of the let go’s are part of a communal journey to acceptance.
