Design Statement
This production of Hamlet primarily explored the power dynamics between the characters, particularly between Hamlet, Claudius, and The Ghost. The scenic design and staging only allowed these three characters to step on the white paper spanning stage right. Proximity to the paper and how much the other characters revered the paper showed how much power they had/felt they had. The lighting design worked in tandem with the staging and scenic design to both use color/texture to establish different locations (inside castle, throne room, outside castle, graveyard), and to shift the focus on and off of the paper as the power dynamics shifted within the show.
